Find Out How to Get a Fresh Start: Debunking Bankruptcy Myths

There are many different myths that exist about filing for bankruptcy. Here, you can find out the truth to these myths. Some of the most common misconceptions about bankruptcy include the following:

Myth: I will never be able to rebuild my credit.

Reality: When you file for bankruptcy, your debt-to-income ratio changes. You can begin rebuilding your credit immediately. A bankruptcy stays on your credit report for seven years, but you may even be able to get a credit card or home loan before that.

Myth: Getting a home loan or car loan in the future will be too difficult if I file for bankruptcy.

Reality: Unlike what most people think, you will likely be able to get a home or car loan in the next few years after you file for bankruptcy.

Myth: I will lose my home, car and belongings if I file for bankruptcy.

Reality: Many people do not lose anything in bankruptcy. You will likely be able to keep all your personal belongings, your home and your vehicles. With bankruptcy, you can reaffirm your debts, mortgage and house. Also, certain things are exempt from bankruptcy, including retirement and 401(k) accounts.

Myth: My spouse has to file for bankruptcy if I do.

Reality: Your spouse does not have to file for bankruptcy if you do, but it may be in both of your best interests to file. Depending on how your assets and bills are divided, it may be best for either you or you and your spouse to file.
